HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ancient Thera.
The site preserves extensive ruins of the ancient Greek and later Hellenistic and Roman city atop Mesa Vouno, including the agora, a theater, temples, a gymnasium, and house foundations, exposed through excavation rather than reconstructed above their ancient courses. It is administered by the Greek Ministry of Culture through its local archaeological authority. The ruins lie in open ground and are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Ancient Thera
Dorian Greek settlers founded the city of Thera on a ridge above the sea around the eighth century BCE, traditionally led by the colonist Theras. The city later served as the mother city that sent colonists to found Cyrene in North Africa in the seventh century BCE. It remained inhabited through Hellenistic and Roman times as a fortified settlement.
