The hillside theater preserves portions of its stone seating cut into and built up on the slope, though much of the stage building and upper tiers have been lost or survive only as foundations. It is maintained by Greece's Ministry of Culture through its local ephorate of antiquities. The site is open to the public in open ground.
About Ancient Theatre of Mytilene, Lesbos, Greece
The theatre at Mytilene was built during the Hellenistic period as a venue for dramatic and civic performances on Lesbos. It became renowned in antiquity, and the Roman general Pompey reportedly had its design copied for the first stone theater built in Rome. The theater reflected Mytilene's standing as a major cultural center of the eastern Aegean.
