About Ancient Messene
Ancient Messene was founded around 369 BCE by the Theban general Epaminondas after he liberated Messenia from centuries of Spartan domination. It served as the fortified capital of the newly independent Messenian state, defended by an extensive circuit of walls. The city became a symbol of Messenian freedom and a center of regional political and religious life.
