HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ancient Kos & the Asklepieion.

The site preserves the terraced ruins of the Asklepieion sanctuary, including foundations of its temples, altars, and porticoes, along with other scattered remains of the ancient city of Kos, most structures surviving only as foundations and column bases. It is maintained by Greece's Ministry of Culture as an archaeological site. The ruins lie in open ground and are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Ancient Kos & the Asklepieion

The Asklepieion of Kos was built in the fourth century BCE as a sanctuary to Asclepius, the god of healing, on terraces overlooking the ancient city. It became one of the leading healing centers of the Greek world, linked with the physician Hippocrates, who was born on Kos and taught there. Pilgrims sought cures through ritual, bathing, and early medicine.
