The site preserves an extensive necropolis with Geometric and Orientalizing period tombs, remains of a Roman era bridge and cistern, and fortification and settlement remains on the Nisi and Pyrgi hills, alongside an on-site archaeological museum displaying finds from the excavations. It is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture together with the University of Crete, which conducts ongoing excavation. The site and museum are open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Ancient Eleutherna, Crete

Dorian settlers established Eleutherna in the mountains of central Crete by around the ninth or eighth century BCE, and it grew into a fortified city controlling routes between the island's coasts. It issued its own coinage and maintained shifting alliances and rivalries with neighboring Cretan cities. Eleutherna remained inhabited into the early Byzantine period.
