The archaeological site is administered by the Greek Ministry of Culture through its local ephorate of antiquities. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Ancient Aptera, Crete

Aptera was a fortified Dorian city-state on Crete, founded in the archaic period and inhabited into Roman and Byzantine times. It controlled a strategic hilltop above the Gulf of Souda, minted its own coinage, and repeatedly warred with the neighboring city of Kydonia over border territory. It played a lasting role in Cretan intercity rivalry and trade.
