HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Amphiareion of Oropos.
The sanctuary preserves the foundations of the Temple of Amphiaraos, an altar, a long stoa, rows of stone theater seating, and remains of a water clock, all standing to low wall height rather than full elevation. It is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture through the local ephorate of antiquities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Amphiareion of Oropos
The Amphiareion of Oropos was built as a sanctuary dedicated to the hero Amphiaraos, developing mainly from the fourth century BCE on the disputed border between Attica and Boeotia. Pilgrims sought healing there through incubation, sleeping in the sanctuary to receive dream cures interpreted by priests. The site also hosted athletic and dramatic festivals honoring the hero.
