HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Alyscamps.

The avenue of stone sarcophagi survives, though most of the finest carved examples have been removed to museum collections, leaving largely plain or damaged coffins in place, alongside the ruined Romanesque church of Saint Honorat at its far end. The site forms part of the Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments World Heritage Site and is managed by the city of Arles. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Alyscamps

Alyscamps began as a Roman necropolis outside Arles along the Via Aurelia and remained in use for burials over many centuries. Tradition held that it contained the relics of Saint Trophimus, making it a renowned Christian burial ground in the early medieval period. It also lay along a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, drawing travelers to its tombs.
