HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Altun Ha (Maya ruins).
The site preserves Maya ruins centered on two main plazas, including stepped temple pyramids such as the Temple of the Masonry Altars, the tallest structure at the site, consolidated and partly restored during archaeological excavation. It is managed by Belize's National Institute of Culture and History. The ruins are open to the public on a ticketed basis, with pathways connecting the two plaza groups.
About Altun Ha (Maya ruins)
Altun Ha developed as a Maya ceremonial and trading center, flourishing especially during the Classic period around the sixth century. Its Temple of the Masonry Altars yielded a large carved jade head representing the sun god Kinich Ahau. The site functioned as a hub linking inland Maya communities with coastal and maritime trade routes.
