About Alligator Creek Bridge Battle Marker
The Alligator Creek Bridge marker commemorates a June 1778 action during the Patriot invasion of British East Florida. Fighting near the crossing ended in a Patriot defeat. The marker gives the event a modern roadside reference within the larger campaign toward the St. Johns River.
A later commemorative marker near Callahan interprets the encounter. No surviving eighteenth-century bridge structure was verified, and the surrounding action area still requires comparison with historic waterways and roads.
History happened here at Alligator Creek Bridge Battle Marker
On June 30, 1778, Patriot troops encountered British-aligned forces near Alligator Creek Bridge. The defeat formed part of an invasion hampered by difficult terrain, supply problems, and divided command. A creek crossing concentrated movement and made the location strategically useful.
The broader expedition failed to secure East Florida for the Patriot cause. Later commemoration preserved Alligator Bridge as one of its principal encounters. The marker should be interpreted as a memorial to that action, with the original bridge and approach routes requiring their own geographical proofing.
