HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Alcántara Bridge, Cáceres province.
The bridge preserves its original Roman granite arches spanning the Tagus, six major arches carried on tall piers, along with a small commemorative Roman temple at one end, though the central arch has been destroyed and rebuilt more than once over the centuries due to war damage. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural under Spanish national heritage law. The bridge remains in use and is freely accessible to pedestrians and visitors.
About Alcántara Bridge, Cáceres province
The Roman engineer Gaius Julius Lacer built this arch bridge across the Tagus River in 106 CE, during the reign of the emperor Trajan, to carry a road linking Roman Lusitania with the interior. An inscription dedicated it to Trajan, and a small temple honored Lacer at one end. The bridge carried imperial traffic and trade for centuries.
