HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Albreda & Juffureh Slave Trade Sites.
The surviving fabric at Albreda and Juffureh includes a former colonial trading post and warehouse, now used as a small museum, along with village structures associated with the later slave trade on the river, though little remains of the earliest infrastructure. The sites form part of the Kunta Kinteh Island and Related Sites World Heritage Site, overseen by the National Centre for Arts and Culture of the Gambia. They are open to visitors, typically reached by guided river excursions.
About Albreda & Juffureh Slave Trade Sites
European traders, Portuguese and later French and British, established riverside posts at Albreda and Juffureh on the Gambia River from the seventeenth century as part of the Atlantic slave trade. Rival powers competed for control of trade in captives at these settlements. Juffureh became known through oral tradition as an ancestral village linked to enslaved Gambians taken to the Americas.
