About Alabama-Coushatta Reservation Founding
In 1854, the Texas legislature granted land in the Big Thicket to the Alabama and Coushatta tribes, who had aided Texian settlers and largely remained neutral or friendly during the Revolution and were not removed to Indian Territory as most other Texas tribes were. It remains one of the oldest continuously held Native American reservations in the United States.
