HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Al Ain Oasis & Hafit Tombs.
Al Ain Oasis preserves its extensive network of traditional falaj irrigation channels and date palm plantations largely intact and still functioning, while the nearby Jebel Hafit tombs survive as Bronze Age stone burial cairns, some restored, scattered across the hillside. Both are managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, and the oasis and tombs form part of the Cultural Sites of Al Ain World Heritage Site. The oasis is freely accessible on walking paths, while the tombs stand in open ground.
About Al Ain Oasis & Hafit Tombs
The Hafit Tombs, beehive-shaped stone burial cairns on the slopes of Jebel Hafit, date to roughly 3200 to 2600 BCE and gave their name to the Hafit period of early Bronze Age Arabia. The adjoining Al Ain Oasis was later cultivated using falaj underground irrigation channels. Together they document the earliest settled communities of the region.
