The Gothic Revival mansion built for Sir Walter Scott survives largely as constructed in the early nineteenth century, preserving his library, study, armor collection, and furnishings within the original rooms. It is managed by the Abbotsford Trust, an independent charitable trust. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with the house, gardens, and visitor center accessible seasonally.
About Abbotsford House (Sir Walter Scott's home)
Abbotsford House was built between 1817 and 1824 as the residence of novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott, on the site of an earlier farmhouse beside the River Tweed. Scott filled it with historical relics, armor, and a large library reflecting his antiquarian interests. The house became closely associated with his romantic vision of Scottish history and legend.
