HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Abbey of the Santissima Trinità.

The abbey preserves its Romanesque church, incorporating reused ancient columns and inscriptions, along with an adjoining unfinished later addition and cloister remains, while some monastic buildings survive only as ruins. It is under the care of the Italian state as a protected national monument. The site is freely accessible with the church open to visitors.

About Abbey of the Santissima Trinità

The Abbey of the Santissima Trinità at Venosa grew from an early church into a major Benedictine monastery. Under Norman rule in the eleventh century it became burial place of several leaders of the Hauteville family, and an unfinished new church was begun beside the older one. It served as a religious and dynastic center of Norman southern Italy.
