HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Abbey of Fontenay.
The abbey preserves an unusually complete set of Cistercian monastic buildings, including the church, cloister, chapter house, dormitory, and a working forge, largely intact from the twelfth century with later restoration. It is privately owned, having passed into private hands after the French Revolution, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Abbey of Fontenay
Bernard of Clairvaux founded the Abbey of Fontenay in Burgundy in 1118 as one of the earliest daughter houses of Cistercian monasticism. Monks there followed the austere Cistercian rule of prayer, manual labor, and self-sufficiency for over six centuries. After the French Revolution the abbey was secularized and converted into a paper mill.
