History happened here at Aachen Cathedral
Charlemagne had his Palatine chapel built between about 793 and 813, creating the core of today’s cathedral.
He died in Aachen in 814 and was buried in St Mary’s Church. In 1215 his relics were transferred to the Shrine of Charlemagne. The cathedral later served as a coronation church for Roman-German kings.
