HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Aïn Tounga (Thignica) Roman Ruins.
The site preserves extensive Roman and Byzantine remains, including a hilltop fortress, a basilica, forum structures, and bath buildings, surviving mainly as standing walls and foundations scattered across an open, largely unexcavated landscape. It is managed by Tunisia's national heritage authority, the Institut National du Patrimoine. The ruins are freely accessible to the public as an open, unticketed archaeological site.
About Aïn Tounga (Thignica) Roman Ruins
Thignica grew under Numidian and Roman rule into a fortified town in northern Tunisia, flourishing in the early Roman era. Its builders raised a forum, a temple, baths, and public buildings, and Byzantine forces later added a citadel. The town reflected the successive Numidian, Roman, and Byzantine presence across North Africa.
