William Paschal Hull was the father of U.S. secretary of state Cordell Hull. A Tennessee farmer who later worked in timber and trade, he married Mary Elizabeth Riley and raised five sons.

EARLY LIFE

William Paschal Hull began with a rented farm in the Cumberland Mountains. In 1875 he bought a 600-acre farm on the Obed River and entered the logging trade, floating timber down the Obed and Cumberland Rivers to Nashville. He later expanded the business after moving his family to Willow Grove in Clay County. He also ran a store and built a one-room school near his home for his sons.
