Wilhelm Augustin Steuben (1699–1783) was an engineer officer in Prussian and Russian service. Stationed at Magdeburg when his son Friedrich was born in 1730, he served in the Russian army from 1731 to 1741, taking his family with him. On returning to Prussian service he became a major and received the Pour le Mérite in 1741. His son’s early experience of military camps preceded a separate career as the Continental Army’s inspector general in the Revolution.
