Stephen Barton died March 21, 1862 at North Oxford, Massachusetts. The National Park Service records that on his deathbed he urged his daughter Clara to continue supporting Union soldiers. Family burial records place him in North Cemetery, Oxford. The sources consulted do not give a specific cause of death.
