Sarah Fairfax was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on 31 December 1730, the daughter of William Fairfax and his then-wife Sarah Walker Fairfax. Her mother died on 18 January 1731, shortly after Sarah’s birth, and William later married Deborah Clarke, Sarah’s stepmother. The Fairfax family moved to Virginia, where Sarah grew up at Belvoir. On 31 December 1747 she married merchant John Carlyle of Alexandria. She bore seven children; two daughters, Sarah Fairfax and Ann, survived childhood. Sarah died on 22 January 1761 after giving birth to Ann.
