DEATH
Roxana died in Litchfield in September 1816 after declining health. Charlotte Smith, a boarder in the Beecher household, described her final illness and the family's loss in a contemporary diary. A transcription of her gravestone in East Burying Ground records September 23, 1816; a separate family memorial in Guilford gives September 24. Historical accounts identify tuberculosis as the cause.
