Hollywood actor and California governor who became the 40th U.S. president in 1981, Reagan cut taxes, expanded defense spending, and negotiated arms reductions with Mikhail Gorbachev as the Cold War ended. A 1937 screen test led to a Warner Bros. contract. Reagan appeared in more than fifty films, including Knute Rockne, All American (1940) and Kings Row (1942). The Iran-Contra affair clouded his second term. He died in Los Angeles on June 5, 2004.

EARLY LIFE

Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois, the younger son of Jack Reagan, a shoe salesman, and Nelle Wilson Reagan. The family moved among several Illinois towns before settling in Dixon, where he worked as a lifeguard on the Rock River. He attended Eureka College, where he played football and acted, and graduated in 1932 with a degree in economics and sociology. He found work as a radio announcer in Davenport, Iowa, and then at WHO in Des Moines, recreating Chicago Cubs games. A 1937 screen test led to a Warner Bros. contract.

Ronald Reagan began as a radio sports announcer before entering Hollywood in 1937. His films included Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row, and during the Second World War he made military training films. As president of the Screen Actors Guild he became involved in labor disputes and anticommunist politics. Hosting General Electric Theater and speaking for the company widened his national audience. Originally a Democrat, he moved toward conservatism and became a Republican in 1962.

Reagan's televised speech supporting Barry Goldwater in 1964 established him as a prominent political spokesman. Elected governor of California in 1966 and reelected in 1970, he confronted student protests, expanded state government spending despite limited-government rhetoric, and approved both tax increases and welfare changes. After unsuccessful efforts to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 and 1976, he defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election.

As president from 1981 to 1989, Reagan combined tax reductions, deregulation, increased defense spending, and criticism of federal domestic programs. His administration dismissed striking air traffic controllers that summer. After a severe recession, economic growth and falling inflation strengthened his position, although deficits and inequality increased. The 1986 tax reform broadened the tax base and lowered rates; another major law offered legalization to some undocumented immigrants while penalizing employers who hired unauthorized workers.

Reagan initially intensified confrontation with the Soviet Union and proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. Later negotiations with Mikhail Gorbachev produced the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, eliminating an entire category of nuclear missiles. United States support for anticommunist movements also involved intervention and controversy in Central America. The Iran-Contra scandal revealed secret arms sales to Iran and efforts to fund the Nicaraguan Contras despite congressional restrictions, damaging confidence in his administration's oversight.

His presidency appointed conservative judges and shifted Republican politics toward lower taxes and a stronger national defense. Its record also included a slow response to the AIDS epidemic and criticism of civil rights policies. Reagan left office in 1989 and announced an Alzheimer's diagnosis in 1994. He died in 2004.

CAREER

DEATH

Ronald Reagan's last decade was shaped by Alzheimer's disease, which he publicly disclosed in November 1994 after his diagnosis that summer. As the illness progressed, his public life receded and his ability to recognize people and communicate diminished. His wife, Nancy, remained central to his care at their home in Los Angeles. The long neurological decline is distinct from the immediate illness associated with his death: pneumonia, complicated by Alzheimer's disease. He died at home on June 5, 2004, aged 93. His final period was therefore not a sudden collapse after continued public activity, but the end of years of increasing dependency followed by a fatal respiratory illness. Claims that his later diagnosis proves the precise state of his cognition throughout his presidency remain disputed and are not needed to explain the documented course after 1994. Public ceremonies followed his death in California and Washington, including a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral. He was buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. A responsible account keeps the prolonged Alzheimer's illness, the reported fatal pneumonia and the subsequent national commemoration distinct, without inventing unrecorded bedside conversations or a more specific infection than the sources establish.
