Robert Hugh Rusk was father of U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk. He studied at Davidson College and Louisville Theological Seminary, worked as a minister and farmer, and later worked for the postal service in Atlanta. Dean Rusk recalled his father in an oral history.
EARLY LIFE
Robert Hugh Rusk attended Davidson College and Louisville Theological Seminary while preparing for the Presbyterian ministry. A lifelong throat problem limited his ability to preach, according to his son Dean Rusk. He subsequently taught school, farmed a 40-acre plot in Cherokee County, Georgia, and worked for the post office after the family moved to Atlanta.
