Nadezhda Alliluyeva (1901–1932) was a Bolshevik secretary and student who became Joseph Stalin’s second wife. Raised in a revolutionary household, she worked for party leaders, including Lenin, before studying at Moscow’s Industrial Academy with the aim of becoming an engineer. She and Stalin had two children, Vasily and Svetlana. Their troubled marriage ended with her suicide in November 1932. Its immediate circumstances are known largely through later personal accounts.

EARLY LIFE

Nadezhda Sergeyevna Alliluyeva was born on September 22, 1901, in Baku, then in the Russian Empire, the daughter of Sergei Alliluyev, a railway worker and revolutionary, and Olga Fedotenko. The family were committed Bolsheviks and later moved to the imperial capital. Stalin, a friend of her father, stayed with the family on several occasions, and in 1917 he lodged in their apartment in Petrograd. After the October Revolution, Nadezhda worked as a secretary in the Bolshevik government, including in Lenin's office.

She married Stalin in 1919, when she was seventeen and he was in his forties. They had two children, Vasily, born in 1921, and Svetlana, born in 1926.

In 1929 she enrolled at the Industrial Academy in Moscow to study synthetic fibers, seeking a career of her own. She was reportedly troubled by the hardships caused by collectivization and by her strained marriage.

On the night of November 8-9, 1932, after a quarrel with Stalin at a dinner party, she died by suicide in their Kremlin apartment. The official announcement concealed the cause of death. She was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
