Mary Tudor (1496–1533), Henry VIII’s younger sister, briefly became queen of France through her marriage to Louis XII in 1514. After his death she married Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, without first obtaining Henry’s consent, creating a dispute over family authority and money. Their descendants included Lady Jane Grey. Mary spent much of her later life in England and was buried at Bury St Edmunds. She is distinct from Henry VIII’s daughter, Queen Mary I.

EARLY LIFE

Mary Tudor was born on March 18, 1496, probably at Sheen Palace, later Richmond Palace, the daughter of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York. She was the younger sister of Arthur, Prince of Wales, Margaret Tudor, and the future Henry VIII. Known for her beauty, she was educated in French, Latin, and music. In 1507 she was betrothed to Charles of Castile, the future Emperor Charles V, but the engagement was broken off in 1514 as English diplomacy shifted. Instead, Henry VIII arranged her marriage to Louis XII of France, who was more than thirty years her senior, as part of a peace between England and France.

Mary married Louis XII at Abbeville on October 9, 1514, and was crowned queen of France at Saint-Denis that November. Louis died on January 1, 1515, less than three months after the wedding.

Henry sent his friend Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, to bring her home, and the two married secretly in Paris in early 1515 without the king's permission. Henry was furious but accepted the match after the couple agreed to pay him a large fine, and they married publicly at Greenwich that May.

Mary and Charles had four children, including Frances Brandon, the mother of Lady Jane Grey. Mary died at Westhorpe Hall in Suffolk on June 25, 1533, and was buried at Bury St Edmunds.

It gives no dependable sequence of treatment and last symptoms from which to reconstruct a more detailed bedside narrative.
