Mary de Bohun was a daughter and co-heir of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, Essex and Northampton, and Joan FitzAlan. She married Henry Bolingbroke, linking her inheritance to the Lancastrian family. Their children included the future Henry V. Mary died in 1394, before Henry became king in 1399, and was never queen. Her sister Eleanor married Thomas of Woodstock. Her exact birth date and some family chronology remain uncertain.

EARLY LIFE

Mary de Bohun was born in about 1369, the younger daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford, and Joan FitzAlan. Her father died in 1373, leaving Mary and her elder sister, Eleanor, as co-heiresses to the vast Bohun estates. Eleanor married Thomas of Woodstock, a son of Edward III, who hoped to keep the whole inheritance by placing Mary in a convent. Instead, John of Gaunt arranged for Mary to marry his son Henry Bolingbroke.

Mary married Henry Bolingbroke in 1380 or 1381, when she was about eleven, and she was allowed to live with him a few years later. Her share of the Bohun inheritance greatly increased Henry's wealth and power.

They had six children: the future Henry V; Thomas, Duke of Clarence; John, Duke of Bedford; Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester; and daughters Blanche and Philippa, who married into the royal houses of Germany and Scandinavia.

Mary died at Peterborough Castle on June 4, 1394, after giving birth to Philippa. Five years later her husband became king as Henry IV.
