Marie of Luxembourg, Queen of France
Marie of Luxembourg was Charles IV’s second queen of France and Navarre. Daughter of Emperor Henry VII and Margaret of Brabant, she married Charles in 1322 after his first marriage was annulled. Crowned the following year, she was central to hopes for a male heir. She died in March 1324 after delivering a premature son who also died, and was buried at Montargis. Accounts give her birth as 1304 or 1305; the carriage-accident explanation for the premature labor is a tradition.
EARLY LIFE
Marie was born in 1304, the daughter of Henry VII of Luxembourg, who became Holy Roman Emperor, and Margaret of Brabant. Her brother John, known as John the Blind, became king of Bohemia, and her sister Beatrice married Charles I of Hungary. Marie grew up in the house of Luxembourg, whose rulers had close ties to the French court. After Pope John XXII annulled Charles IV's marriage to Blanche of Burgundy in 1322, the king needed a new wife who could give him an heir, and a match with Marie was arranged.
Marie married Charles IV on September 21, 1322, probably at Provins, and was crowned at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris in May 1323.
She soon became pregnant. In March 1324, while traveling with the king, she was injured when her carriage overturned.
The accident brought on a premature birth. Her son lived only a short time, and Marie died on March 26, 1324, at Issoudun. She was buried at the Dominican church in Montargis.
