Margaret Douglas
Margaret Douglas Smith was the mother of the economist Adam Smith. Widowed before his birth, she raised him in Kirkcaldy and remained close to him throughout his life.
EARLY LIFE
She was a daughter of Robert Douglas of Strathendry, a Fife landowner.
CAREER
DEATH
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and a modern Princeton biography date her death to 1784, with the latter giving May 23. A University of Glasgow web summary implies 1788, apparently confusing her with Janet Douglas, who died that year.
