EARLY LIFE
Lu Muzhen was born in 1867 in Xiangshan County, in Guangdong Province, now the city of Zhongshan, the daughter of a merchant family. Like most women of her time and region, she had bound feet and received little formal education. In 1885 her family arranged her marriage to Sun Yat-sen, a young man from the nearby village of Cuiheng, who was then studying in Hong Kong. The marriage was traditional, and Sun spent much of the following years away, studying medicine and plotting revolution.
Lu Muzhen bore Sun three children: a son, Sun Fo, who later became a senior official of the Republic of China, and two daughters, Sun Yan and Sun Wan.
As Sun became a wanted revolutionary after 1895, she and the children lived with his family, for a time in Hawaii with his elder brother, Sun Mei, and later in Macau.
In 1915 Sun divorced her to marry Soong Ching-ling. Lu Muzhen accepted the divorce and lived quietly in Macau, where she died on September 7, 1952.
