Lorenzo II de’ Medici, Duke of Urbino, married Madeleine de La Tour d’Auvergne in 1518. Their daughter Catherine de’ Medici was born in Florence in April 1519; both parents died soon afterward.

EARLY LIFE

CAREER

DEATH

Lorenzo died on May 4, 1519, six days after his wife Madeleine and three weeks after the birth of their daughter Catherine. A University of Pisa medical history describes an abdominal illness lasting about six months; he also suffered from syphilis, but that study does not identify it as the immediate cause. His tomb is in Michelangelo's New Sacristy at San Lorenzo, Florence.
