Jeanne d'Albret
Jeanne d’Albret was queen of Navarre and mother of Henry IV of France. A political marriage to the Duke of Cleves was annulled in 1545; she later married Antoine de Bourbon and became a leading Protestant ruler.
EARLY LIFE
She ruled Navarre and supported the French Protestant cause.
CAREER
DEATH
Jeanne d'Albret fell ill in Paris in early June 1572 and died there on June 9. A contemporary autopsy described long-standing lung lesions and a fever, evidence later medical historians identified as pulmonary tuberculosis. Stories that she was poisoned by perfumed gloves are unsupported by that evidence. She was buried at the Collegiate Church of Saint-Georges.
