James A. Hamilton was the Scottish father of Alexander Hamilton and his brother James Jr. He and their mother Rachel Faucette lived together in the Caribbean but could not legally marry.
EARLY LIFE
A National Park Service historical study identifies him as a son of a Scottish laird. His exact birth and death dates are not securely established here.
He worked as a merchant in the British Caribbean, with unstable fortunes. He left Rachel and their sons while the boys were young.
CAREER
DEATH
James Hamilton lived on St. Vincent in his later years and wrote to his son Alexander from there in 1793. A St. George's Cathedral burial register records his burial on June 3, 1799. A later note in the register about a Hamilton killed by a colonel refers to Alexander's 1804 duel, not to James's cause of death, which is unknown.
