EARLY LIFE

Isabella was born in 1247, the daughter of James I, King of Aragon, known as the Conqueror, and his second wife, Violant of Hungary. She grew up at the Aragonese court in the years after her father's conquest of Valencia from the Moors. Her marriage was arranged as part of the Treaty of Corbeil of 1258, in which Louis IX of France and James I settled their rival claims in southern France and Catalonia. On May 28, 1262, at Clermont, she married Louis's son Philip, who became heir to the French throne.

Isabella bore Philip four sons: Louis, who died in 1276, Philip, the future Philip IV, Robert, and Charles, later Count of Valois and father of Philip VI.

CAREER

DEATH

Isabella of Aragon was the first wife of Philip III of France and the mother of Philip IV. On the journey home through Calabria, Isabella, who was pregnant, fell from her horse while crossing a river. Isabella of Aragon, was Queen of France from 1270 to 1271 by marriage to Philip III of France. Having accompanied her husband and father-in-law on the Eighth Crusade against Tunis in July 1270, Isabella became queen of France the following month on the death of King Louis IX. On their way home, while crossing the Savuto river near Martirano in Calabria, on 11 January 1271 she suffered a fall from her horse: six months pregnant with her fifth child, she gave birth prematurely to a son, who died soon after. First transported to Martirano Castle and then to Cosenza, exhausted and feverish, Isabella died there on 28 January 1271 aged 24. Her death was a devastating emotional blow to her husband, especially since she had been pregnant. The available biographical account does not describe a continuous final medical course. It gives no dependable sequence of treatment and last symptoms from which to reconstruct a more detailed bedside narrative.
