Harriet Livingston Fulton Dale was the daughter of Walter Livingston and Cornelia Schuyler of Teviotdale. She married steamboat inventor Robert Fulton in 1808 and had four children. Widowed in 1815, she returned to Teviotdale, then married Charles Augustus Dale and moved to England. She died there in 1826 and was buried at Claverack, New York. Fulton’s miniature portrait of her survives at New York Historical. Her birth year is disputed, with 1783 and 1785 in accounts.
EARLY LIFE
Harriet Livingston Fulton was born on Dec 12, 1783 in Clermont, New York. The surviving biographical summary provides only limited evidence about childhood, schooling, and the daily circumstances of the household, so those details are not reconstructed here without documentation. What can be stated securely is that this person belonged to the interconnected family world from which HistoryGPS traces participants, relatives, and later descendants of the Revolutionary generation.
No distinct public profession or office for Harriet Livingston Fulton is established by the source summary used for this entry. The surviving record is primarily genealogical and documents family identity rather than an independent public career. Harriet Livingston Fulton died on Mar 24, 1826. Additional claims about employment, public service, or accomplishments have been omitted where the consulted source did not support them.
CAREER
DEATH
Harriet Livingston Fulton Dale died in England on March 24, 1826, aged about forty-two, though accounts differ over her birth year. She had moved there with her second husband, Charles Augustus Dale, after being widowed by Robert Fulton in 1815. Her last recorded wish was that her body be returned to her family in New York. That request was carried out, and she was buried under her married name Dale at the Reformed Dutch Church cemetery in Claverack, rather than beside Fulton in the Livingston vault at Trinity Church. The consulted biography does not identify a fatal illness or provide a reliable sequence of her final symptoms and treatment. Robert Fulton's pneumonia and death in 1815 were a different medical history and should not be assigned to Harriet. The surviving account gives a clear final location, date, and burial request, while leaving her immediate cause of death and private last moments unestablished.
