Ernst Gideon von Laudon was born on February 13, 1717, at Toce in Swedish Livonia, into a family of Baltic German minor nobility. His parents possessed status but limited wealth, and the young Laudon had few opportunities for advancement at home. He entered the Imperial Russian Army as a cadet, beginning a military career shaped more by persistence and field experience than by powerful patronage.

Laudon served during the War of the Polish Succession and in Russian campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. He learned irregular warfare, reconnaissance, raiding, and operations across difficult terrain. Hoping for better prospects, he left Russian service and attempted to join the Prussian Army. Frederick II rejected his application, reportedly judging him unsuitable. The rebuff pushed Laudon toward Austria, the state whose forces he would later lead against Prussia.

He entered Habsburg service in 1742 as a captain in the Trenck Pandurs, a corps of irregular troops recruited along the military frontier. The Pandurs were effective scouts and raiders but notorious for indiscipline. Laudon gained experience in the War of the Austrian Succession while trying to impose order on such troops. He later transferred to regular service and spent years in relatively obscure frontier assignments.

Promotion came slowly. Laudon married Klara von Hagen and lived modestly while continuing to study terrain and tactics. His willingness to undertake dangerous reconnaissance and independent operations gradually attracted notice. By the mid-1750s he had become a lieutenant colonel, still far less prominent than officers born into great aristocratic families. The Seven Years’ War created the opportunity he had long lacked. His energy, aggressiveness, and understanding of light troops were especially valuable against a Prussian army known for rapid movement and disciplined battle tactics.
