Edward VII, eldest son of Queen Victoria, reigned from 1901 to 1910 and gave his name to the Edwardian era, promoting closer ties with France that led to the Entente Cordiale of 1904. In 1863 he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark. He survived typhoid fever in 1871 and made a long tour of India in 1875 and 1876. Edward became king on January 22, 1901. Edward died at Buckingham Palace on May 6, 1910, and was succeeded by his son George V.

EARLY LIFE

Albert Edward was born on November 9, 1841, at Buckingham Palace, the eldest son and second child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Known in the family as Bertie, he was created Prince of Wales soon after his birth. His parents subjected him to a strict and demanding program of education, which he resisted. He studied briefly at Oxford and Cambridge and in 1861 trained with the army at the Curragh camp in Ireland. His father's death that December, soon after Albert had traveled to Cambridge to reproach him over an affair, left the queen blaming her son. In 1863 he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

Edward VII spent most of his adult life as Prince of Wales before succeeding Queen Victoria in January 1901. During that long apprenticeship he performed ceremonial duties, traveled, and served on royal commissions, while Victoria restricted his access to state business. His North American tour in 1860 and Indian tour in 1875–1876 developed a public role for the heir through personal appearances across the empire and abroad.

As king he cultivated a sociable, visible monarchy. His coronation, postponed because of an emergency operation, took place in August 1902. He supported charitable and medical causes and took an interest in military and naval administration, encouraging improvements in the Army Medical Service and the fleet. His influence operated through advice, patronage, and access to ministers rather than direct personal control of parliamentary government.

Foreign affairs offered a particular outlet for his linguistic skills and wide family connections. His visit to Paris in 1903 helped improve public relations with France before the Entente Cordiale of 1904. The agreement itself was negotiated by responsible ministers and diplomats and settled colonial disputes; it was not a military alliance created by the king alone. He also encouraged improved relations with Russia. His meetings gave royal diplomacy prominence within Britain's constitutional system.

The final part of his reign brought a severe domestic political dispute. The House of Lords rejected the Liberal government's budget in 1909, raising questions about the peers' financial powers and the circumstances in which the monarch might create enough new peers to overcome resistance. Edward was drawn into discussions with the government but died in May 1910 before the crisis was resolved. His son George V inherited both the crown and the continuing controversy, which led to the Parliament Act of 1911. His reign combined public ceremony and diplomacy with confrontation over the authority of the Commons.

CAREER

DEATH

Towards the end of his life he increasingly suffered from bronchitis. He suffered a momentary loss of consciousness during a state visit to Berlin in February 1909. In March 1910, he was staying at Biarritz when he collapsed. He remained there to convalesce, while in London Asquith tried to get the Finance Bill passed. The King's continued ill health was unreported, and he attracted criticism for staying in France while political tensions were so high. On 27 April he returned to Buckingham Palace, still suffering from severe bronchitis. Alexandra returned from visiting her brother, George I of Greece, in Corfu a week later on 5 May. On 6 May, Edward suffered several heart attacks, but refused to go to bed, saying, "No, I shall not give in; I shall go on; I shall work to the end." Between moments of faintness, his son the Prince of Wales (shortly to be King George V) told him that his horse, Witch of the Air, had won at Kempton Park that afternoon. At 11:30 pm he lost consciousness for the last time and was put to bed. He died 15 minutes later, aged 68. Alexandra refused to allow Edward's body to be moved for eight days afterwards, though she allowed small groups of visitors to enter his room. On 11 May, the late king was dressed in his uniform and placed in a massive oak coffin, which was moved on 14 May to the throne room, where it was sealed and lay in state, with a guardsman standing at each corner of the bier. Despite the time that had elapsed since his death, Alexandra noted his body remained "wonderfully preserved".
