Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor
Charles V was Holy Roman Emperor and, as Charles I, king of Spain. He married Isabella of Portugal in 1526; their son Philip II succeeded him in Spain.
EARLY LIFE
Charles ruled the Spanish kingdoms and their overseas territories and held the imperial title during the first half of the sixteenth century. He transferred his Spanish dominions to Philip II in 1556.
CAREER
DEATH
After abdicating his crowns, Charles retired to the palace beside Yuste Monastery in Spain. A fever developed in late summer 1558, and he died there on September 21. Historical and medical research identifies malaria as the probable cause. He was first buried at Yuste; his remains were later moved to El Escorial.
