CAREER
DEATH
Abiah Folger Franklin died in Boston on May 18, 1752, aged eighty-four. Benjamin Franklin's recollections emphasize her strength, character, and many years of household labor, but do not provide a securely identified final disease. The fact that she lived to an advanced age does not establish that she died without illness or that age itself was the immediate cause. Her later life followed the death of her husband Josiah in 1745 and the dispersal of their large family into adult households. The consulted material records the death date and family setting without a dependable account of the duration of her final illness, the care she received, or the people present at the end. Her son's later reflections preserve her memory more fully than her clinical history. No specific diagnosis, treatment, or final statement has been inferred from those general recollections.
